TENNIS SYMANTICS
===================
There are lots of ways to refer to people who can help you hone your tennis skills. It can be pretty confusing, especially on the Web where you are so often just looking for help, but find it is presented in so many forms. Frustration sets in!!!
All of the following search phrases should help: tennis lessons, tennis instruction, tennis tutor, tennis teacher, tennis coach, tennis pro, tennis trainer, tenis trainer, tennis training, group tennis lessons, and tennis lessons los angeles.
But what is the difference if any?
Are there any differences between a tennis instructor, tennis tutor, tennis teacher, tennis coach, tennis pro, and tennis trainer you ask? Well, the USPTA and USTA seem to think so and I agree in some cases. First, let's examine the words, their origin, then there possible current meanings.
Of course, "tennis lessons" is a general phrase describing the service being promoted within a broad field of "tennis instruction". "Instruction", "tutor", and "teacher" are words widely used by educational institutions in other disciplines which imply someone with special training and/or certification in a particular field. So, "tennis instruction", "tennis tutor", and "tennis teacher" in my opinion are roughly equivalent. "Coach", "Pro", and "Trainer "is where the hairs can get split more finely.
Historically, "Tennis Professional" or "Tennis Pro" was used to describe someone who made a living PLAYING tournaments. This persons physical skills put them in the top percentage of those who compete. As the profession of teaching tennis evolved, it became clear to consumers, federations, and trade associations that someone who achieved great competitive physical prowess was not always the same person as those who could demonstrate and communicate those skills to others. "Tennis Trainer" came from another direction in sports.
In the US, a "trainer" is usually someone with credentials in the academic discipline of athletic training at a University. A person who tends to an athletes injuries or method of preparation outside of competition. Outside of the U.S., this person is often called a "physio".
The bottom line to your search for tennis lesson help, whether it be with a tennis teacher, tennis coach, tennis pro, or tennis trainer, is to
look for a USPTA certified professional who has passed the trade association's practical and written exam. Good luck with your tennis!
